PRESENTATION:
The objective of this course is to introduce the students to the science of sociology, which studies the impact of society on people's life. The syllabus seeks that students think and reflect on current core issues within society such as globalization, the growing dissafection towards politicians in democratic societies, international migratory movements, the role of women and men in contemporary societies, the cyberspace, or the changes experienced in the family institution, among others.
For furutre professionals of translation, mediation, interpretation and communication, who will be developing their work in a globalized and changing world, this introductory approach to the study of human society will confer them a sound and critical vision of the different phenomena and social processes which articulate our reality.
At the end of the course, students will be able to know about the main concepts of the science of sociology, to identify the major sociological perspectives, to understand the fundamental features of contemporary society, to come closer to social events with a critical and analytical sense, and to develop the argument in the debate on complex issues of social context.

TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODOLOGIES AND ACTIVITIES:
Teaching and learning methodologies and activities applied:
A communicative and cooperative approach to learning will be employed in the classroom. Students will be expected to participate actively in class (both in-persona and onine) by working individually, in pairs and in groups, working on exercises or case studies and reporting their answers, findings or opinions back to the class. Therefore, while perfection is not expected, some confidence to speak in English will be necessary.
Theoretical-practical classes (lectures): an important part of the classes will consist of combination of theory and practice. After the explanation of the theme by the lecturer, and guided by the lecturer, some examples and case studies will be analysed, in order to understand the applications and implications of the crisis communication concepts, strategies and techniques to a real landscape. Students are expected to take an active part and be proactive in the practical activities (asking and answering questions, suggesting examples, taking part in debates…).
Practical classes: there will be practical classes in which students will have to apply the acquired knowledge to real case studies, analysing current examples, a film/ documentary, making presentations or taking part in debates, among others. Most of these activities will be assessed as they are a part of the final mark.
Tutorials: the student can attend tutorials with the lecturer during her office hours (the hours will be published in the PDU). Due to the Covid-19 situation, tutorial will be held through the platform Teams. It is recommended to send an email beforehand (czurutuza@usj.es) to arrange the day and tiem for the tutorial.
