PRESENTATION:

This subject aims to provide students with the necessary strategies for L1-L2 translation (Spanish-English) of non-specialized texts. This subject enables students to familiarize themselves with the reality of the job market and the challenges inherent in L1-L2 translation. They will also be able to acquire and develop strategies for the translation process from Spanish to English and put them into practice through the translation of texts both inside and outside the classroom. Students will pay attention to lexic, grammatical and style problems
that may arise in the process of translation and will try to solve these problems jointly in the classroom. In addition, students will pay special attention to their
personal challenges in the translation from Spanish to English and will develop, together with the teacher, individual strategies to overcome them.

Learning outcomes R01 Understand the reality of the labour market of translation from Spanish to English and be informed enough to make a decision on whether to accept the translation task in the correct conditions to carry out the work successfully.

R03 Reflect on different options of translation of texts and through documentation and learning processes, take appropriate translation decisions.
R04 Apply strategies to find an equivalence in the translation of texts from Spanish into English.
R05 Reflect on the particular challenges and implement strategies to mitigate the risk of committing serious errors and to increase quality in reverse translations from Spanish into English.

PRE-REQUISITES:

It is essential that students start with a level equivalent or higher than a B2 of the Common European Reference for Languages. Given the case that the level of the student is lower, it is the student's responsability to meet the standards. 

SUBJECT PROGRAMME:

La profesora podrá introducir cualquier modificación en la programación presentada, así como en los contenidos, sistemas de evaluación y prácticas, siempre que sea necesario conforme a la evolución del curso y de la situación sanitaria. De igual forma, esta programación queda supeditada a la evolución de la situación sanitaria durante el curso académico. La docente, conforme a las indicaciones que se le hagan llegar a este respecto, podrán modificar en cualquier momento la programación y modalidad de las sesiones, así como la ejecución de ciertos ejercicios y/o el sistema de evaluación. La materia se va a iniciar siguiendo un sistema híbrido que alternará sesiones presenciales y sesiones online síncronas (por Teams). De esta forma, los estudiantes acudirán presencialmente al aula las semanas pares del calendario académico; las semanas impares se hará un seguimiento online (mediante sesiones síncronas en Teams). En la programación semanal se ha marcado convenientemente a través de qué sistema se desarrollará cada semana y sesión. Si las circunstancias (por la pandemia) cambian y debemos pasar todas las clases al sistema online, las fechas de entrega se mantienen igual.

Subject planning could be modified due unforeseen circumstances (group performance, availability of resources, changes to academic calendar etc.) and should not, therefore, be considered to be definitive.

The theoretical content will be presented in supplementary readings and master classes. In class students will have the opportunity to raise any doubts and questions and initiate discussions on the information presented. The contents are taught in English and communication between teacher and students will be primarily in English. The course is highly practical, focusing on the types of non-specialised texts from various fields. Students will complete the translations in English individually and in small groups. Subsequently, these translations are reviewed, analysed and occasionally presented in class to:
a) demostrate different techniques and translation options
b) suggest improvements.
